Dvoyanka, or dvojanka double flute from Bulgaria
Bulgarian double flute made in one piece with a melody and a drone tube. Also called small bagpipe it is a shepherds flutes but also connected to the polyphonic tradition. Found in many other Balkan countries with similar names it is well known for its soft, magical sound.
Gemshorn, flute popular in the Renaissance of the ocarina type
A flute from a horn of chamois or other animal that was in use during the 15th and 16th c. in different sizes. It is a type of ocarina blown from the wider side through a wooden duct leaving the horn intact. With the revival of Early Music instruments came again in use.

The transverse flute of the Middle Ages is known today only by the iconographic sources. It was probably a flute with a wide bore and a good low register. Minstrels, angels, monsters and other creatures are depicted playing flutes of that kind.
